Rationale for change
Per Amboss, immediate management of an acute asthma exacerbation includes use of systemic oral steroids, not inhaled corticosteroids.
All severe acute asthma exacerbations, most moderate acute exacerbations, and some cases of mild exacerbations should receive systemic corticosteroids.
The most recent Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) reports recommend oral corticosteroids for all patients, regardless of exacerbation severity.
ICS are used in long-term maintainence to prevent future flareups.
