According to Uworld, carbamazepine is not useful for acute mania. Here is the explanation they give in question ID 2355:

Although valproate or carbamazepine can be used in the management of bipolar disorder, they require oral administration (which the patient is currently unlikely to accept) and typically require gradual titration over several days to achieve therapeutic blood levels before they take effect.
