Inner layers of the macula contain yellow xanthophyll carotenoid pigments {{c1::lutein}} and {{c1::zeaxanthin}} in higher concentrations than the peripheral retina.
Extra
histologically, in the macula there is more than one layer of ganglion cells, in contrast to a single ganglion cell layer in the peripheral retina.
