- Defined as inflammation of the vitreous from a bacterial or fungal infection
- The most common cause of endophthalmitis is postcataract surgery with secondary bacterial infection; causes pain and decreased visual acuity
- Ddx. vision loss (conjunctivitis = no vision loss)
- Other risk factors for endophthalmitis are central venous catheter, TPN, antibiotic use, immunocompromise, and recent abdominal surgery
