See: Iron Absorption -- HFE increases Hepcidin in response to high iron levels. In primary hemochromatosis, HFE function is impaired, causing failure of iron level sensing, leading to the characteristic decreased hepcidin that ultimately causes unregulated (increased) iron absorption, not decreased as previous.
Extra text was also rewritten to more logically mirror the physiologic sequence of events -- iron sensing happens first, increased absorption happens as a result, not the other way around.
